Love, Liberty
Draft #7
September 29, 2023

FADE IN:
EXT. SMALL APARTMENT - NIGHT
It is dark, with little other lights save for those projected
through the windows of an antique brick building. A peculiar
room on the top floor radiates a unique hue, unlike the rest.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
Two-hundred and five years ago,
John Keats wrote a letter to his brother, George.
CUT TO:
INT. DORM/SMALL APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS
A girl, LIBERTY, slouches in her chair at a small table
against the wall. A CLASSICAL ART BOOK is splayed open in
front of her, with various other papers and a STIFF DRINK,
nearly empty. She wears an over-sized shirt with her hair
down, and minimal makeup. Despite this modesty, JEWELRY
blankets her figure like a second skin.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
“I feel more and more every day,
as my imagination strengthens,
that I do not live in this world alone-
Liberty stares down at a picture/painting of significance in the book as she takes a sip.
The picture is on the right page; a FULLY WRITTEN LETTER addressed to KIT (save for the
signature) sits on the left. Conflict coats her face, before
her eyes flicker to a BALL OF ROLLED UP PAPER in the left
corner of the table. She makes a noise of discontent in the
back of her throat as she grabs it and unrolls it.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
— but in a thousand worlds.
Liberty rereads it, adopts a pained expression at "I am
thrilled with your...”, “... exalted to begin our happy
family...”, and visibly winces in reaction to ”Love, Your
Darling” at the end. She takes a rather large drink, emptying
the glass, before she places the crinkly letter on the left
of the book. She looks between the letter to her husband, and
the painting. Liberty taps her WEDDING RING against her
glass, then holds her hand in front of her face to study the
shiny trinket.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
The mighty abstract idea I have
of beauty in all things stifles
the more divided and minute domestic happiness-
She rotates her hand in slight degrees to witness its interaction with the light.
LIBERTY
Good God...
She rubs her temples and promptly stands up with her glass,
rounds the corner to the kitchen, and opens the fridge,
grabbing a bottle in the doorway. As she goes to open it, she
huffs as she reads the paper label on it; VIRGIN FERMENTED
GRAIN WATER. She puts it back in the fridge and grabs an
identical bottle next to it, labeled FERMENTED GRAIN WATER.
She refills her glass to the rim and sits back down.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
-I consider the roaring of the
wind my wife and the Stars
through the window pane my
children.
Liberty wiggles the ring from her finger and places it upon
the book, moving it to highlight certain details of the
picture.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
So, I melt into the air with a
voluptuousness so delicate...
She turns behind her to look at a bouquet of dried flowers hanging from her window, then glances up at
her books. Liberty takes a significant breath, before she picks up a pen and signs it ”yours eternal”.
LIBERTY (V.O.)
That I am content to be alone.”
Liberty closes the card.
FADE OUT.
